<![CDATA[Paul McConkey Race and Canoe Slalom Oscars]]> http://bailliestottc2.co.uk/blog.php?article=109
We've both been really busy trying to sort out the chores that build up when you spend so much time on the road. Last week the weather was chilly but not proper winter yet. We did a mixture of testing our new boat and training in our old boat for the Paul McConkey Memorial Race at the weekend.

The weather really brightened up for the weekend and the race ran really well in perfect racing weather. Incredible for Britain I know. We had an OK race, we were both pretty flat after a hard weeks training but did a solid job of the courses to win the Prem Race. It was good to see the Junior crews posting some impressive times, we'll have to watch our backs.

We've also been putting some work into sorting out the Oscars and are pleased to announce that the Canoe Slalom Oscars will be making it's biennial return on the 25th October. It will be held in The Royal Pavilion, Llangollen. Please don't contact us about tickets yet, we'll announce more event details and how you can buy tickets next Wednesday (1st October) both on this website and on canoeslalom.co.uk.

We've also got a new photo gallery of us paddling the Petawawa river in Canada online, follow the link below to check it out.

<![CDATA[Slovenian Open Cancelled]]> http://bailliestottc2.co.uk/blog.php?article=108
It's disappointing to not get to race after driving over here but it was the best decision under the conditions. We're going to make the most of the spare day by driving back to Bratislava immediately so we can train on the course there tomorrow before collecting our new boat and flying home in the evening. Hopefully the weather in Nottingham has improved from what we've been hearing.

Cheers tim

<![CDATA[Frustrating times in Solkan]]> http://bailliestottc2.co.uk/blog.php?article=106
There was a flat water parallel slalom money race in Ljubljana on Thursday evening but unfortunately there was no C2 category so we didn't get to race. Huw Swetnam represented GB strongly ripping up to take 2nd place and win 150euros.

Once again the C2 field is small this weekend but with three very fast Slovak crews and the local Slovenian boys it should still be a good race. We've just watched demo runs and whilst the course is at least one hundred times simpler than last weekend it still looks pretty tricky to do fast.

We're racing qualification tomorrow afternoon and then Semi and Finals are on Sunday, live results are available from the World Series website below.

Cheers Tim

<![CDATA[One Hundred Euros Up!]]> http://bailliestottc2.co.uk/blog.php?article=105
The Skantars won and paddled well, but the triple Olympic Champions only did one run. They didn't seem to be able to 'get psyched' and didn't show their true class.

The upside of it was that we won 50 Euros each, handily covering our water fees for our training here. It's fair to say, we need more practice here, but it is an excellent site and I think we'll both look forward to our return. Another good thing is that we bought the Hochscorner's boat! I can't wait to paddle it and try to understand the stunning dynamism that they display in their paddling.

We're off to Solkan tomorrow, it will be nice to go somewhere new and learn some new things. The adventure continues!

Cheers Etienne

<![CDATA[Slovak Open]]> http://bailliestottc2.co.uk/blog.php?article=103
Happily for us we've already made the final since there are only 9 C2s entered! Also gaining direct qualification are all the Womens K1 as there are less entered than qualify for the Semi-Final so congratulations to them as well. Despite the pressure being off we're going to do our best to post some competitive runs tomorrow which might only involve getting all the gates.

As usual the Slovak Open is putting on an amazing event with lots going on around the race. After our qualification event tomorrow we'll be competing in a Cash Prize 4-Cat Team race so that should be fun. For more details check out the official website below.

<![CDATA[Carnage Qualification]]> http://bailliestottc2.co.uk/blog.php?article=101
We made an OK start and were going reasonably well at half way but then we lost our flow. Disrespecting the tricky exit from breakout Gate 10 we collected our first 50 on Gate 11 and dropped very low into the next breakout. Things got dramatically worse when we got to the bottom drop. We were too far left with too much angle and too much edge. Combined this meant we power flipped into the drop and spent the next 10 seconds inspecting the bottom of the course with our knuckles and elbows. Having found the bottom to be only slightly less smooth than we would like we eventually saved ourselves the dishonour of a swim by getting up with a solid 4th attempt at a roll. Very much out of breath we got a little bit confused at this point. We'd missed 3 gates at that point but could easily make it back for the last two downstreams. It also looked possible to get back for the upstream gate on the drop. We gave it a good shot but the wave flattened and we fell back into the last stopper. Thoroughly demoralised by this point and still quite out of breath we floated through the last gate and paddled to finish forgetting we could have got the second last gate too.

This meant that we were last after first runs over 120 seconds behind 10th place which was the qualifying cut off.

Happily our second run was a significant improvement, it wasn't an awesome run but we did manage to satisfy the aforementioned first two rules of C2. This meant we had a grand two run total in excess of 450 seconds which is easily our highest total ever and was a solid 200 seconds behind first. Very luckily for us this was good enough for 9th so we get to play again tomorrow. Sadly one of the crews to fall behind us and miss out was our team mates Davies/Lister who did really well on such a difficult course but had similar problems to our first run at the bottom drop.

All in it wasn't our proudest days canoeing but we're happy to be in the Semi and will be looking to improve tomorrow. Congratulations to Kucera/Batik who managed to get all the gates on both runs and so won convincingly for the second day in a row.
